Common Bond Basketball began in 1999 as a collaboration between a group of young players, their parents, and a few area coaches who were seeking to create a new avenue for serious young basketball players. Parents Jim Szymusiak and Dennis Durco, together with Scott Stark (who served as this team's first coach), formed the initial squad that joined forces with other players throughout Michigan to compete at the highest level.

Common Bond's mission rapidly evolved, all the while attracting numerousother participants and supporters. Teams were formed in other age groups, and coaches and parents came forward to help build an organization that would represent not only a high level of basketball but also a high level of scholarship and commitment to community. Durco devised the name "Common Bond" to represent the idea that players and others with common interests were being brought together to create something much larger than themselves.

Common Bond's reputation - as an organization dedicated to producing the best in young people, both on and off the court - propelled its rapid growth. Within five years, Common Bond grew into the high quality organization that it is today. Presently, Common Bond is the largest organization of its kind in Michigan.
